Default Chanel Serial Number Guide

Hi babes,

Just something I thought of sharing and discussing. As we all know, chanel bags come with serial numbers in form of hologram stickers on it. I read somewhere (can't remember where, really) that the fore number/numbers represent the year/years they were made in. For eg, currently, those beginning from 14xxxxxxx is made/released in 2011, 13xxxxxxx are from 2009-2010 etc.

I just need to understand one thing. As a chanel lover, I'm quite disturbed by the fact that some bags postings claim that their bags are brand new, bought recently but when I see their serial numbers, those bags are, to me, not considered brand new. I mean, I understand that brand new would be about 1/2 to a year old bag. Maybe to some, those that have never been used before? But how does a 4-5 year old bag (or some older than that) justifies to be a brand new bag? One thing, it's definitely credible if it hasn't been used before but to say it's brand new, I'm disappointed much. Please note, I'm not referring to postings that says 'like brand new'. This is purely for ones claiming it's a brand new bag that has just been bought and so on.

Please do leave your comments and views yeah. This is for discussion sake and I have no intentions of offending anyone or any party. Please don't condemn me. It's just out of my love and passion for bags, Chanels especially.

Cheers and merrios bag lovers!

some sellers are just not very truthful, aint they? Maybe they can say its bought when, but seldom used. Instead of brand new!! Hope no one gets cheated in this way, or else it would be quite sad for the buyer esp when it comes to bags so expensive like Chanel.

Hi all!

This is a sticky subject. I think people know their Chanels hold their value plus Chanel increased pricing significantly this year.
If I can figure out how to post an email with the complete info, I will do so for your review.
What does new mean? I am trying to sell an Anna Sui bag that is still in new condition but I bought it 5 years ago (approx). It still has the original security tag from net a porter along with the merchandise tag untouched. This is certainly not a new bag but the fact it has never been used and still has original tags makes it quite valuable as it is a limited edition bag.
It is of my personal opinion that a bag that has been used even once cannot be worth the amount people are charging on the preowned websites. It is just like fine jewelry, furniture or what have you. Once used, it is no longer worth the value paid at the time it was purchased. I will not buy a piece that has been used and is worn for the price people are asking. Also, I will not buy a Chanel with an old hologram that people are trying to get more than they paid ... it is outright robbery.
If anyone knows how I can forward an email for the forum let me know and I will send it in full form. Otherwise, here is a cut and paste of the vital info:

Authentic Chanel handbags from the mid 1980s on come with authenticity cards embossed with a serial number (pictured on right). The serial number matches the serial number appearing on a sticker placed somewhere within the handbag’s interior lining. The serial number sticker has Chanel logos and was protected by a clear tape with hologram security feature from approximately 2000-on. The sticker, Chanel logo, and hologram design varied with the manufacturing date:

Note that over time, serial number stickers often become detached from handbags. Authentication cards also often become lost. Therefore, Chanel handbags missing these items may still be authentic.

Hi Gammy,

This is the post that I mentioned I read from somewhere. Thanks for the info. This will really help fellow Chanel lovers hoping to find a Chanel gem without having to spend a bomb on it.

Again, there's nothing wrong in selling a bag which was bought years ago, especially for Chanel, the more vintage, the better! We just have to come out honest about it.

Happy polling Deluxe Mallers!

Since there are plenty of counterfeits on the market,it is very important as well that buyer of Chanel designer handbags be aware of the basic things in differentiating genuine designer handbags from fake ones.

Brand new means being in a fresh and unused condition.

Unless the seller is claiming that the bag has just been bought from the boutique but is in fact a bag from some years ago. I don't see a problem with seller listing their unused bags as brand new.

Quite a number of my friends including myself have bags sitting unused in their wardrobe, these are bags that have never been carried once since leaving the boutique. Are they considered brand new? Yes I would think so.

Chanel lovers should know that certain pieces are highly sought after for the unique colour/hardware/leather or due to their rarity (some colours/designs doesn't reach the Singapore boutique at all). The prices of the classics have risen significantly in the recent years, does it make economical sense for sellers to sell them cheap?

It's a free economy, prices go up when supply is low.

One point to note on the serial numbers, I have bags freshly bought from the boutique that still have hologram stickers starting with 13XXXXXX. Also I have read in TPF that some seasonal pieces from 11C are having hologram stickers starting with older serial numbers. It could be Chanel recycled some of the unused serial numbers.
